The Heart of a SERVANT - Guest Speaker Mark Mohr

This past Sunday, the 28th, City Church welcomed a guest speaker Mark Mohr to their congregation.

Mark is a singer, songwriter and member of the music group Christafari; and he was a welcome face among our eager congregation. Mohr's message centered around the idea of having the heart of a servant. He explained that a true servant has a changed heart. Jesus asks us to take on his heart and serve him in a true, real way.

I have been hearing a common theme in the messages at City Church recently, and the meat of the message is always the same: serve others. Still, though this idea seems simple and attainable, many of us don’t take into account the true nature of that request.

As Mohr said, a true servant serves for the glory of God. He said that we need to serve without focusing on the “me” aspect of everything we do. One of the things that this animated speaker said that stayed with me is that we need to “give up our expected rights so that others needs will be met.”

I guess it’s the idea that we need to think about others even before we think about ourselves that has had an impact for me. We currently live in a time when everything is “me” focused. It’s hard to walk away from this because we have stuff like Facebook and Twitter to help promote this self-centered aspect of our generation.

Still, Mark Mohr said that we can work on this and become God’s bondservants. He said that there are times when we need to be able to say no to some things, but when in doubt, just ask God what you are called to do.

I think that’s where many of us has to take a step forward: There are things that we enjoy doing, and there are things that we have talent doing, but the key is that we should use our talents and passions to serve with a heart like Jesus had.

“We are all pottery, we all have a purpose,” Mark said. “We have been created for something .”
